Inscribed around the hourglass and hands is the phrase: The Iron Bank will have its due."
Westerosi King, Robert Baratheon, spends his gold like it’s water, tossing gold Dragons to the winners of jousts, but when Eddard Stark becomes Hand of the King and sees how much debt the kingdom owes to the Iron Bank he becomes deeply concerned. That debt is inherited by Joffrey, and again by Joffrey’s successor, Tommen. With the war and the Lannister’s precious-metal mines drying up, the debt looms large, and without a clearly acknowledged king it may be hard to repay. This may explain why Stannis Baratheon is able to secure his loan from the Iron Bank, promising to pay the Westerosi debt after his ascension.
